Part 3: Getting our Kicks on Route 66; Dinner in Private Room with Floor Show
After leaving the Grand Canyon and on our way back to Las Vegas to fly to San Jose, CA, we drove about 75 miles on Historic Route 66 between Williams, AZ and Kingman, AZ. We did encounter a few interesting roadside vendors depicting a taste of the sixty’s culture. The first place as you can see in the photo below was a bit unusual with the old cars in front and mannequins on top of the building. The second photo below was a place that was somewhat of a store/restaurant selling memorabilia. We stopped there because my bladder was about to explode. For most of the Route 66 drive there were very few travelers except for when we stopped at this roadside establishment there was a tour bus out front. When I went in to use the restroom everyone from the tour bus was also in line to use the restroom. I did not want to wait (actually I could not wait) for 30 people to use what was most likely a one-stall bathroom. So I got back in the car and we just pulled over down the road and I peed. There was not much traffic on the road except for the tour bus travelers and they were obviously going to be a while at their stop so it wasn't a big deal. Sometimes you just got to go.
We arrived in Palo Alto around 6:00.m. on Friday, May 13 to visit my husband's sister and her husband and their two daughters. On Saturday we went to Big Sur and stayed in cabins along the river; a very picturesque place among the redwoods. On Sunday we went to Deetjen's Big Sur Inn for dinner. We had booked a reservation and there was a place set up for us in a private dinning room. There was only 5 of us and we thought that was somewhat odd but it was nice to have a room to ourselves. The dinner was delicious and while we were eating dinner there was a cat hanging out with us named Fabio. He was playing with a large lizard named Tweedledee or Tweedledum. Apparently there were twin lizards in residence and the restaurant staff didn't know which lizard Fabio was playing with. Anyway it was entertaining to watch the cat and lizard play. Fabio was very gentle with the lizard and the lizard didn't seem to mind Fabio's attention. We had a good time at Big Sur. On our way down to Big Sur we stopped at the Dennis the Menace Park in Monterey which was a place my husband played when he lived in Carmel briefly when he was five.
Thanks Ann & Dan for treating us to a nice weekend at Big Sur and having us at your home. Thanks Sarah for giving up your bedroom. Thanks Sarah and Beth for sharing your exceptional talent with the singing and violin playing.
Here are a few more and final photos of my vacation.
